Made in Abyss Introduction and Story (Spoilers)

A city atop a gaping pit. The hopeful offering their well wishes to the fearless. A daughter searching for her mother. A boy trying to protect his only friend. This is Made in Abyss. The 1,000 meter wide and presumed 20,000 meter deep hole residing in the middle of the sleepy town of Orth is known as the Abyss. It has claimed countless lives of the Delvers who have tried to root out its mysteries, and even without any hope of returning, countless more rush in head first. Riko, the daughter of one of the greatest Delvers in Orth’s history, resides in an orphanage with other aspiring Delvers her age. These children, left behind by other explorers who have lost their lives in pursuit of answers, prepare for equally perilous lives as they try to eke out a living in the only way Orth’s inhabitants know how. After nearly losing her life on a routine trip to the outer layer of the Abyss, Riko is saved by a mysterious robot boy named Reg who has lost his memories. Shortly afterwards, word reaches Riko that her mother Lyza, Lord of Annihilation, a legendary White Whistle, had perished in the Abyss. Her only remnants are her whistle, and tattered parchments that lead Riko to believe she is still alive. These documents also mention Reg, and they both believe they are meant to search out for answers at the bottom of the Abyss. Thus begins a journey of longing. Riko seeking answers of her mother’s whereabouts and the true nature of the Abyss and Reg, hoping to find out why he traveled from its depths to the surface in the first place. Their journey will have joys and hardships, and test the very limits of human attachment. The Abyss is nothing if not treacherous, and no one who has ever stepped foot into its depths has come out the same. It’s a one way trip for this pair, they knew that before setting off. But they may not live to see the end of it, and death will not be the most frightening danger lying in store.

What We Liked About Made in Abyss

This is without a doubt one of the best anime I have ever seen. It showcases storytelling and character growth in ways I thought modern Japan was no longer capable of, outside of a few talented studios. It’s masterfully crafted, reeling you in deeper and deeper like the very Abyss itself. No matter how much screen time they have, each character makes an impact. There are zero dead scenes in this show, and every moment serves a purpose. Every phrase of dialogue answers a question, but also brings up a new one. The voice acting also lends itself perfectly to the work. By the end of the series, I hadn’t felt that a pair had fit their characters this well in a long time. There are some shows that you feel simply couldn’t survive a dub, and this is one of them.

Discussion Time

The chibi characters and fun, cutesy art style belie the true dark undertones in this mature work. Similar to Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica, once you get in too deep with Made in Abyss, there’s a point of no return. You have to watch it until the end, the damage is already done. It’s a beautiful story with beautiful imagery, all set to a beautiful soundtrack. I can’t imagine a more perfect work meant for the small screen than this. It evokes some of the best themes in fiction with 2D animation, similar to Studio Ghibli’s work. It also hits you hard, taking you on an emotional journey that very few stories can accomplish. The sadness that permeates this work is what makes the joys all the more memorable. Even as the gripping darkness wrenches the last bit of hope from Riko and Reg, in the very next scene, you will find their excitement and sense of wonder uplifting. As a fully grown man, this show had several scenes that had me bawling more than I had in over a decade. I personally see comments online of posters crying to scenes I felt apathetic to and simply gloss over them. That’s how surprised I was by how powerful the drama in this story was.

Why You Should Watch Made in Abyss

1. Beautiful Art and Music

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]

The very first episode will wow you with its seemingly handpainted backgrounds and detailed backdrops. Televised anime just doesn’t have this level of detail. The sunlight hitting the outskirts of the town of Orth, the rivers and streams interweaving the districts across each slope, it’s all drawn to perfection. I hadn’t yet seen an anime I was jumping to buy a Blu-Ray of until Made in Abyss. Whichever way you’re viewing this series, this work is worth far more than a stream. The music is also striking and powerful. The show’s soundtrack, composed by Kevin Pekind, is moving and direct. Within the initial scenes, the song Underground River sets the tone for the series. Beginning slow and quiet, all the way to sharp and blaring, and finally mellowing out. It also contains some very meaningful lyrics that highlight themes found within the story. The imagery and sound are in perfect harmony in this work, and it’s hard to imagine either without the other.

2. Masterful World Building

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="NEOGDS-252373" text="" url="" ]

We’ve all seen some massive info dumps in fantasy stories, and anime is guilty of many of these. Animation teams have limited time to adapt written work, and chapters of light novels and manga don’t sync up to anime episodes all that well. Made in Abyss, however, is surprisingly faithful; if not entirely so. After watching a good portion of the series, I was intrigued enough to begin the manga. Details all matched up, and the important elements of the story were emphasized in the anime. As mentioned previously in this review, there are no dead scenes. Nothing added for pure comedic or dramatic effect. It all weaves in perfectly to tell the story and add background details. Questions and answers are brought up in the same breath. The first three episodes of the series lay the groundwork before the journey truly begins, and while none of this is boring, it is all to get you ready for the chaos that awaits. The Abyss is complex and terrifying. It has tens of thousands of creatures, some harmless, but many dangerous. It is also littered with countless corpses, some made by those who were adventurers who perished, but far more from the inhabitants of some long lost civilization before mankind ever discovered it. Each Delver has their own reasons for exploring the Abyss, and every episode gives you insight into some of the reasons one might have to continue on this impossible journey.

3. Memorable Characters

Riko and Reg are as sympathetic a pair as you can find in a story. They’re children, and as such, can be prone to making poor choices. Even still, it would be a hard journey for anyone, adult or otherwise, to make this journey. They’re headed to the very bottom of the Abyss, a place that the legendary White Whistles only visit when they’re making their last dive. A trip to a place where no one can return. It’s not a place for children, but due to Riko’s cunning and the knowledge that she has learned from following her mother’s exploits, along with Reg’s mysterious power and strength, the two have more of a chance than anyone else to finish their journey. In Made in Abyss, you will encounter some exceptionally crafted characters. You feel for them. When they laugh, you smile. When they cry, you frown. And when they suffer, you suffer as well. Nanachi, one of the main characters from the key art, is introduced very late in the series, but she is one of the best newly introduced characters I’ve seen in a work of fiction. Her purpose and the path she’s taken to meet Riko and Reg are tragic and heartrending. She herself is such a warm and lovable character. She livens an already lively show and simply commands presence on screen. Even the lesser characters that only have a handful of lines make their mark before leaving. The earnest and friendly Maruruk, the quiet and sleepy Kiwi, the reliable and responsible Gilo, and the intimidating and forceful Ouzen all round out a diverse cast of memorable characters. They all serve their roles wonderfully in the story, making you wish they could remain on the journey, but knowing the destination, it’s impossible. You will wish the best for these individuals, but knowing where they are and why they’re there, you can’t help but worry for them. The Abyss is not a safe place. Not at all.

Why You Should Skip Made in Abyss

1. It is Merciless

As I mentioned previously, I cried. I sobbed. I teared up. There was snot and everything. Episode 10 broke me. I felt a bit sorry for the characters previously. With each one that they met and departed from, the story was filled with sorrow, but nothing that even came close to bringing out the waterworks. And then “it” came. A beast of the Abyss. It came at them in the fourth layer, the layer from which no child could survive an ascent from. This devilish creature, an orb piercer, Tama-chan as Nanachi calls it, attacked Riko and Reg. Its poison quills struck Riko, and unable to protect her, Reg risked an ascent. Riko was as good as dead. The ensuing scene broke me. Riko crying bloody tears and spitting blood, and Reg powerless to save her. It was simply a matter of time before this enthusiastic young girl who you watched grow and trudge fearlessly on took her last breath. Reg, her protector, cried endlessly as he watched his first and only friend slowly die. In a last ditch attempt to save her, he tried to break her arm with a rock to expel the poison. This gruesome scene which seemingly lasted an hour but was only about 7 or 8 minutes, almost left me dehydrated from loss of tears. This would not be the only episode to get me to lose masculinity. Fortunately, episode 13 also was a double episode, so it gave me two chances to cry. Nanachi’s backstory is tragic, horrifying and a true testament to the bonds of friendship. I will say, if you don’t at least feel sad, then you’re probably a monster, a veritable Johan Liebert. With that said, I would watch these scenes all over again. They took the show from an amazing series to simply a masterpiece. I know this is listed as a reason why NOT to watch this, and I say that for the people who cannot deal with anything bloody. Skip it if you must, but if you can at all, endure it. It’s worth it.

Final Thoughts

I can’t imagine watching a better anime this year. I watch a number of shows each season, most of which range from decent to terrible. The cream of the crop lands on the scale from good to exceptional. Made in Abyss stands above all those as magnificent. It redefines the scale, and every fantasy work I watch going forward will more than likely be compared to this work. What did you think of Made in Abyss? Did you laugh or did you cry? Am I going to be alone in losing man points from this show? Let us know what you thought of it in the comments section. We’d love to hear from you!

In almost every high school across the world, there's some sort of popularity system. Usually, it's the rich and beautiful girls and athletic and funny guys that find themselves in charge of the school. In Kakegurui, at Hyakkaou Private Academy, popularity is based on a much different system. The rich still run the school, but their position is not guaranteed because, with a single misplaced bet, your entire position could be jeopardized. You see, at Hyakkaou Private academy, one's gambling strength determines their position and power. If you are a good gambler, then you could literally run the school. If you are a bad gambler, however, you could acquire a major debt running into the millions and be subjected to a life of servitude as a "pet:" a "Pochi" or "Mike", depending on if you're male or female, with even your life plans after school being predetermined. For Yumeko Jabami Yumeko, a compulsive gambler, who enjoys the thrill of gambling regardless of the stakes, this school is a paradise. Through Kakegurui, Yumeko finds herself playing against stronger and stronger gamblers, as her gambling skills draw the attention of the school's top gamblers. Of course, for gambling to have such a profound effect on the school's hierarchy, the stakes must be high. Throughout Kakegurui, Yumeko and the other gamblers continue to make extreme bets. Even when the odds are immensely out of their favor, they continue to gamble. Even when they have more to lose than they do to gain, they continue to gamble. Not only Yumeko, Kakegurui is full of extreme gamblers willing to bet it all, to improve their position at the school, or even just for the thrill of it. Here are the most extreme bets from Kakegurui.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

8. Poll Janken (Ep 1)

In Yumeko's first day at Hyakkaou Private Academy, she learns of the school's dog-eat-dog ways the hard way. Hoping to increase her position at the school, a student in her class, Mary Saotome, challenges Yumeko to a modified game of Rock-Paper-Scissors. In this game of Rock-Paper-Scissors, the other students in the class draw rock, paper or scissors and place it in a ballot box. Even more, a game of chance than your standard game of Rock-Paper-Scissors, what you can throw is determined by the cards you draw from the ballot box. Yumeko and Mary each start the game with 120 chips, worth ¥1,200,000 total. In the first round, Yumeko makes and wins a meager bet of ¥20,000. In a completely foolish and naïve manner, she then bets ¥500,000, which she promptly loses. After another series of winning a two-chip bet to lose a fifty-chip bet, Yumeko finds herself at the whim of Mary's cruel side as she is taunted. Despite the chip count and Mary's taunting, Yumeko states that the game's just beginning. Even with all her confidence, Mary wins all of Yumeko's chips in the end. Almost as if she didn't suffer a crushing and humiliating defeat, and much to everyone's surprise, Yumeko then asks Mary to play one more game. When Mary comments on her lack of chips, Yumeko then empties ¥10 million from her bag onto her desk. When Mary expresses her disbelief at Yumeko's willingness to put ups such a large sum of cash, Yumeko taunts her in return and reveals that she's aware that Mary has rigged the game in her own favor. For Yumeko, the thrill of gambling is more exciting than winning, which is why she goes all immediately, leaving it all up to luck.

7. Life or Death (Ep 3)

After receiving an invitation to the Traditional Culture Research Society club room, Yumeko finds herself facing Yuriko Nishinotouin, a member of the Student Council and president of the Traditional Culture Research Society. There she is challenged to an original game, Life or Death. In the game Life or Death, players place bets on where they think miniature swords in a metal cup will land. In this deadly game of roulette, picking the correct number, however, does not guarantee a payout. If the sword lands blade down, then the player will receive 30 times their bet. If it lands blade up, however, the player will lose 30 times their bet. With such extreme stakes, Yumeko gleefully agrees to a game. The first-round ends in a draw, as no player correctly guessed where the swords would land. In the second round, unlike the last, Yumeko places all of her chips on the number, hedging her bets that she has figured the game out, more specifically how Yuriko is cheating. As Yuriko realizes that she has been caught in her cheating and begins to panic, several members of the Student Council, including the President, come to observe the game. When the dealer lifts the cup, it is revealed that while Yumeko had correctly guessed where the sword would land, it landed in the death position, leaving Yumeko with a ¥310 million debt. Despite the large debt and suspicions that there was, even more, cheating involved than she initially thought, Yumeko becomes even more excited about her time at Hyakkaou Academy. Yumeko made her most extreme bet, both in terms of thinking she'd understood the limits of her opponents cheating as well as in monetary terms. For her miscalculations, Yumeko found herself classified as a Mike, someone needing to make even more extreme bets to overcome her insurmountable debt.

6. Debt Exchange Indian's Poker (Ep 4-5)

It wouldn't be any fun if students in large debts are stuck there without any real chance to get out of their debt. To give these students a shot at clearing some of their debt, the Student Council announces a Debt Exchange Game. In this game, 4 players with a debt will play 10 rounds of two-card Indian Poker. At the end of the rounds, a player's debt will be replaced with that of the person who was originally in their ranking, with the winner of the game's debt being cleared completely. Yumeko finds herself in the same group as Mary, along with another Mike, Nanami Tsubomi, and the tough and arrogant Jun Kiwatari, who pretends to have a ¥10 million debt in order to make a profit from the game. The first few rounds are played quite normally, until the third and fourth round. After Yumeko wins a hand with a higher on suit-hand than Jun, and Mary bets in the same fashion the following turn, Jun folds, thinking that Mary and Yumeko are working together to let each other know their hands, only for Mary to reveal that she didn't have a winning hand and was actually bluffing. Yumeko and Mary then reveal that they are, in fact, working together, just as Nanami and Jun are, to supply the other with information. With the players now actually aware of their hands, the game becomes a game of bluffing. By the final turn, Jun has bluffed his way into first place, but when Yumeko and Mary make bets that would give Nanami first place if she calls their bet. Nanami calls the bet, betting not only her chips but also her position in the school's hierarchy. While Yumeko, with the largest debt, had nothing to lose, the other students risked increasing their debts for the chance to lessen or even erase it completely: a pretty extreme bet considering how deep in the red many of them were, to begin with.

5. A Nail-biting Game of Double Concentration (Ep 2)

After learning of the school's hierarchy and pet system from her friend, Ryota, Yumeko become even more excited about having transferred to Hyakkaou. So excited, in fact, that she challenges a member of the Student Council, Itsuki Sumeragi to a game. Short on cash, but excited to gamble against one of the strongest gamblers in the school, Yumeko accepts a ¥20 million loan from Itsuki for their game of "Double Concentration." In Double Concentration, Yumeko and Itsuki must find matching cards from not one, but two decks of identical playing cards. The first round is remarkably close, with spectators realizing that in order to find matching pairs with such efficiency, Yumeko and Itsuki must be memorizing the location of the cards that they've already flipped. After a close series of turns, Itsuki manages to take the lead and close out the game, leaving Yumeko with a ¥20 million debt. Realizing that she can't pay back this debt, Yumeko begs Itsuki for another game, hoping to win their second game, and break even. Instead of ¥20 million, Itsuki has a more interesting wager for Yumeko: Itsuki is a fan of nails and has an amassed a collection of human nails through gambling. Itsuki agrees to a second game of Double Concentration with Yumeko on the condition that she bets her nails. Yumeko agrees to the bet, and wins in one turn, revealing that she was aware of how Itsuki cheated in the first game. Yumeko then decides to raise the stakes one last time, challenging Itsuki to a different card game, where the loser will experience the pain of having their fingernails ripped off. Unfortunately, Yumeko is clearly made of a different cloth, as Itsuki tearfully declines the challenge.

4. ☆Life-Altering Battle of Dream Idols☆ (Ep 8-9)

After the Student Council President takes a surprise leave from the school, the Student Council Head of PR and idol, Yumemi Yumemite, decides to be the next member of the Student Council to challenge Yumeko. With the help of Student Council Accountant, Kaede Manyuda, Yumemi decides to play a series of games against Yumeko, set up so that her victory will be ensured. Before the match, Yumemi invites Yumeko behind the stage to prepare for their post-concert match. During the conversation, Yumemi tells Yumeko that due to them both having "yume," the character for "dream," in their names, it is the fate of them being together. To achieve this, instead of having Yumeko match her bet of ¥50 million, Yumemi decides that if she Yumemi wins, the two will become an idol group, Dreaming Creaming Sisters. When Yumemi states that she is an idol to see the smiles on her faces, Yumeko calls her out on her lie and gets Yumemi to confess that she vehemently despises her fans and that being an idol is just a step on her path to achieving her life goal of winning an Academy Award. Yumeko then reveals that she planted a recorder on Yumemi's assistant, recording the entire confession. Having revealed her trump card, Yumeko changes the bets so that the wagers are a bit more even, with both girls putting their lives and futures on the line: if Yumemi wins, Yumeko will hand over the recording and give up her life and become a member of Dreaming Creaming Sisters. If Yumeko wins, however, she will play the recording to all of Yumemi's fans in attendance, thereby ruining any chances of achieving that which she's sacrificed so much for, an Academy Award. For Yumeko, thanks to her position as a Mike, her future is already out of her hands. But for Yumemi, ¥50 million yen, a small amount to her, and her entire life's work is on the line.

3. Expulsion Tarot (Ep 12)

After facing the majority of the Student Council, Yumeko finally receives the chance to gamble against the Student Council President, Kirari Momobami. During their conversation, they discuss their love and reasons for gambling. They then agree to one game, with stakes that are of any extreme worth to the two of them: the loser will withdraw from Hyakkaou Private Academy. For Kirari and Yumeko, two lovers of gambling, to leave Hyakkaou Academy would be akin to getting kicked out of Heaven. Yumeko and Kirari agree on a game of Tarot, where Yumeko gains the value of the card flipped. If the card is facing her, then it has a positive value, if it's facing away, negative. After Yumeko, Kirari, and Ryota each flip a card, if Yumeko's score is positive, then she wins. If the fool card is flipped facing Yumeko, then she instantly wins, however, if it's facing away then she instantly loses. After Yumeko and Kirari each take their turns, Yumeko has a score of –20. With –20 points, it falls on Ryota to ensure that Yumeko doesn't leave the school. With Kirari having flipped the highest valued card, he realizes that he needs to find the fool card. Ryota panics because even though the bets seem to only affect Yumeko, he wants to be together with Yumeko and has something to lose as well. In the end a game, three people have something on the line. For Ryota, Yumeko leaving the school would cause him to lose the one important thing to him at Hyakkaou Academy. Yumeko and Kirari risk their lives at Hyakkaou Academy, a punishment second only, perhaps, to death.

2. A Life-Changing Game of Choice Poker (Ep 10-11)

As rule of Hyakkaou Private Academy, members of the Student Council cannot refuse a challenge to a Public Match by "Mike"s or "Pochi"s. After having her initial challenge to a game refused, Yumeko invokes her right to a Public Match with Kaede Manyuda, the Student Council Accountant. What follows is an intense game of "Choice Poker." The rules for Choice Poker are essentially the same as regular poker, save for a few differences, the most important ones being what makes the game so exciting: during the betting phase, the players are only allowed to place a bet and raise, with the highest bidder earning the right to choose whether a strong hand or weak hand wins. As the accountant and heir of a powerful family, Kaede decides to play with 100 chips, each chip worth ¥10 million. Yumeko, however, is only able to bet on her debt, worth 31 chips. After losing the initial hand to Yumeko, Kaede realizes that as the chip leader he only needs to beat her bet by one chip in order to be in control of the game. Confident with the ability to read Yumeko's play and decision, Kaede reveals his entire hand to Yumeko before the betting phase begins. Sure enough, Yumeko bets her entire stack of chips, for Kaede to raise her by one chip, declaring that the strong hand wins, winning all of Yumeko's chips. Despite losing all of her chips, Yumeko asks for Itsuki Sumeragi to serve as a patron, and bid with her money in hopes of continuing the game. Because of Itsuki and Kaede both hope to become the Student Council President, Itsuki decides to help Yumeko. This time, with more money to wager, Yumeko and Kaede engage in a heated battle of bets, until the pool has reached ¥2 billion. Kaede then raises the 100 chips, once again, an amount that Yumeko and Itsuki are unable to match. Of course, at Hyakkaou money isn't the only thing worth betting, and Yumeko convinces Itsuki to put her life and life worth on the line. Intent on winning the hand, Kaede raises the bet his own life. Using the fact that Yumeko played her hand in the same fashion as the last hand, Kaede decides to call "strong" as the winning hand, putting his life and billions of yen on the line.

1. ESP Russian Roulette (Ep 6-7)

After saving Yumeko from being assaulted by Jun and his friends, by challenging them to a game of Russian roulette, Student Council Beautician Midari Ikishima becomes obsessed with Yumeko and her love of gambling. When the change to satiate her interest in Yumeko appears, Midari kidnaps her and Ryota to force her into playing a game. Midari challenges Yumeko to an ESP matching game, with a game of Russian roulette as the wager. In the game of Russian roulette, both players load as many bullets as they like in the chamber, and put the revolver in a box. The winner of the round chooses a gun at random and has to shoot their opponent. If the persona intentionally misses, however, then the loser gets to shoot them. The winner of the overall game wins ¥1 billion. With Ryota as the dealer, Yumeko is confident that Midari has no way of cheating, and perhaps even her own way to gain an upper hand. In the first round, Midari wins but chooses Yumeko's gun, which Yumeko claims to have sabotaged before revealing that it's simply unloaded. In the second round, Yumeko manages to win, and point a gun at an eager Midari. Yumeko then reveals that she had chosen her own gun, which she is sure of due to the guns' difference in weight. In the last round, Yumeko and Midari choose to load their guns with two bullets each. Yumeko wins again, and this time, with both guns loaded, there's a real possibility of Yumeko either shooting Midari, as Midari hopes she would or intentionally missing and possibly being shot herself. Instead, Yumeko reveals that she's aware of how Midari was rigging the game. Unlike other opponents, Midari was actually rigging the game in Yumeko's favor, in hope of being shot and experience pain, what she considers to be life's greatest pleasure. When not accounting for Midari's cheat, both players didn't actually match any cards, ending the game in a draw. Somehow, for the game with the most extreme bets -¥1billion and the risk of bodily injury- it actually had the lowest payout.

Final Thoughts

In many of the games, Yumeko found herself with the odds immensely against her. Despite this each time, she was willing to make the bets that were needed to please her love of gambling. Because to her, gambling is more about what you have to lose, than what you gain or lose in the process. Due to the love of gambling, Yumeko manages to keep Kakegurui full of exciting and extreme bets. Let us know what you thought of Kakegurui and the bets in the comments below!

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan Introduction and Story (Spoilers)

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is exactly what the English name suggests; it follows priests as they investigate claims of miracles from God. The main characters are good friends Hiraga Josef Kou, an incredible scientist, and historical and cryptanalysis expert Robert Nicholas. They both work for the Vatican for an organisation called the Assembly of Saints. Together, they travel the world to investigate instances that are claimed to be miracles, trying to first disprove them through science and analysis to see if they truly are acts of God. Robert and Hiraga investigate three main missions during Vatican Kiseki Chousakan - one in South America involving a virgin conception, one in Africa about a priest whose dead body doesn't rot, and finally one in Italy with a statue of Jesus that is bathed in rainbow light every morning. Through their explorations and investigations in Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, all three miracles and the incidents around them are proven to be not miracles of God but explainable by science. Just because they aren't miracles doesn't mean that nothing deeper is going on though; Hiraga and Robert uncover a massive conspiracy being run by the seemingly holy priest Father Julia! In Vatican Kiseki Chousakan, nothing is as it seems. From miracles to cults, murder to secret plots, everything will keep you guessing what is happening - and what will happen next.

What We Liked About Vatican Kiseki Chousakan

To put it simply, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is fun to watch. It's really exciting with intense stories and deep plot holes that can really drag you in, and excitement and adventure to match. It has a fair amount of supernatural elements too, such as demons, satanic rituals, mysterious figures from the beyond - and of course, crazy miracles that need investigating by Robert and Hiraga! Everything about the show is dramatic, from the characters' reactions and attitudes to the solutions to the mysteries. That drama keeps the energy high and keeps you hooked, and feeling like everything happening is intense. The story itself is a cool one, following two priests on their journey to prove or disprove miracles. They use plenty of science and occult history to do that, which is also interesting to watch and clearly well thought-out by the writers of Vatican Kiseki Chousakan. It has plenty of shocking moments too, so just when you might be settled into the pace, it rocks the boat with a sudden reveal or a new element of the mystery. That shock factor also serves to keep you interested and paying attention and is undeniably exciting. Occasionally Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is even a little bit scary and morbid, depicting martyrs' deaths, demon babies, and Nazi sympathisers. Everything is done to tell a stimulating and action-packed story from an unlikely source. No one expected that two priests could have such insane adventures - and that's what keeps you watching. You just have to know what will happen next!

Discussion Time

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is an anime that left us feeling conflicted; it has so much going for it, and yet so much holding it back at the same time. Initially, we were super excited about such an interesting idea for an anime, exploring religion in a new way and offering up an anime that stood apart from the others airing at the same time. And from the first episode, we were intrigued, waiting with anticipation each week for the next episode and the next part of the story. We wanted to know more about who Hiraga and Robert were, and what was going on at the private boys' school they were investigating in South America. And for the first three episodes, it was great. And then very suddenly, the entire plotline of that story arc was revealed in one episode, the scenes rushing together one after another with no transitions, and everything was resolved almost as quickly as it had been revealed. This proved to be the pattern with Vatican Kiseki Chousakan; slowly reveal an awesome story, and then rush to wrap it up and explain everything as quickly as possible. Watching the stories unfold was really fun and it was great to try to guess what would happen and see the friendship between Hiraga and Robert, as well as some interesting side characters like Lauren. But on the flip side, the stories were too big for what the anime could accomplish successfully. Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is a small anime with big dreams. It can be really fun to watch, or really frustrating, depending on what you're looking for in an anime. The final decision on which you feel is stronger, the pros or the cons is up to you!

Why You Should Watch Vatican Kiseki Chousakan
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="KABA-10571" text="" url="" ]

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is a really fun anime to watch. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat, craving the next episode to see the next piece of the puzzle unveiled. The ideas in the anime are all original and very unpredictable, so if you're craving an anime that will keep you guessing and trying to solve the mystery, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan can provide that. It never slows down either; from start to finish, it's a wild ride with only occasional slower scenes to explain something. But they're always followed up by some (often supernatural) excitement!

1. Original Idea

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" cdj_product_id="LACM-14618" text="" url="" ]

A lot of anime these days seems to feel all too familiar like it's a story or a plot point that you have already seen countless times. Also, most anime is based on a media form that already exists, such as a manga, light novel, or game. And while that is not a bad thing at all, when something original comes along, of course, it's special! And Vatican Kiseki Chousakan was definitely an original idea and story. That means that viewers are left guessing the whole time as well as they had no other way to know what would happen next other than to wait with anticipation for the next episode to air. While there are a fair number of anime that make use of Christian theology in some way (including famous titles like Evangelion or Hellsing, which both use it in very unique and different ways), Vatican Kiseki Chousakan uses it as it's base. The two main characters are priests after all, and Vatican is right in the title. You definitely know what you're signing up for! Vatican Kiseki Chousakan uses Christian ideology, famous figures, morals and codes to create its original story without ever pushing the religion itself on the viewer. As for Christian viewers, don't worry; it also never puts the religion down, either! It's a fine line to walk and a risk for sure, but Vatican Kiseki Chousakan does it tastefully.

2. Fast-Paced Action

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is not lacking in action. While there are sometimes extended scenes of talking or explaining the context, they're always counterbalanced by intense action sequences. Some can be quite violent, such as the Motley Clown's decapitations in a penultimate story arc, or the horrific sacrifices the priests were made into in the African church. There are life-and-death sequences as Robert and Hiraga race against the clock to survive, and these will keep you on the edge of your seat! With guns, murder, snake attacks, drugs, and satanic rituals, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan brings nothing short of intense supernatural action in every episode. In fact, the slowest episode of the anime is actually the last one, which just explores Ryota's story. It still has some intense moments but is more of a narrative than the rest of the anime. The other 11 episodes are jam-packed with violence, chases, puzzles, fights, and surprises. By the time the final episode comes along, especially if you're bingeing the show and watching a lot of it, the slower pace might be a nice relief!

3. Unpredictable

One thing Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is incredibly good at is completely blindsiding the viewer with plot reveals. Most of the stories behind each arc in the show seem to come out of nowhere before they are explained, and each clue along the line is shown. But until that moment, it's hard to ever expect what is coming. Sometimes even Robert or Hiraga has figured out the mystery behind the miracle, but they don't reveal their knowledge to the viewer until they have to. Trust us when we say that information is delivered in a very blunt and straight-forward way. While it can be argued as negative to have all the answers dumped on you at once and then the steps retraced to explain it, it definitely keeps the show unpredictable! Even the eventual reveal that Father Julia, who has seemed like such a good person, was behind everything was surprising - and it was even more shocking at the end when he helped Hiraga's brother rather than kill him. You can try to solve the mysteries of the characters and miracles faster than Hiraga and Robert, but good luck being successful!

Why You Should Skip Vatican Kiseki Chousakan

Some of the same reasons that make Vatican Kiseki Chousakan worth watching can actually make it not appealing to people as well. While it does have fast-paced action sequences and the plot moves along very quickly, it does it at the expense of rushing through the story and throwing character development and explanations to the side. Vatican Kiseki Chousakan has a hard time finding a balance between staying interesting and shocking and keeping viewers satisfied and feeling like they understand.

1. Rushed Storylines

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is a 12 episode anime with massive aspirations. The story arcs are attempts to tell are huge stories with a lot of characters, conspiracies, plot points, and reveals. And it wants to do three of them! However, due to time, it simply ends up rushing each in the end. For example, the first three episodes slowly begin to explain that something is afoot at a private school in South America where priests are being murdered and a woman is pregnant despite never having sex. It sets up a really intriguing mystery that keeps you guessing the whole way. And then in less than 20 minutes, drops the massive bombshell that the woman is being artificially inseminated with the cryogenically frozen sperm of Hitler and the child might be a demon due to rituals around his birth. On top of that, the children at the school are being trained for the next Hitler youth by old ex-Nazis posing as priests. And then it's all completely resolved and Robert and Hiraga return to the Vatican – in about one episode. To say that Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is ambitious with its plot lines is an understatement. The ideas that it has are great, but we would love to see them fleshed out over an appropriate number of episodes. While the pace guarantees you won't ever be bored or grow tired of a story, it does it at the expense of leaving you feeling confused and overwhelmed instead. Nothing is explored as deeply as it should be, and could have been if each arc had about twice as many episodes. Vatican Kiseki Chousakan has the plots for at least a 24 episode anime crammed into one half as long, which can leave the viewer feeling disappointed and stressed.

2. Inconclusive Ending

Be warned that Vatican Kiseki Chousakan does not have a conclusive ending. While all of the smaller story arcs explored in the show are closed and completed, the overarching one surrounding Father Julia and his entire conspiracy is left open. The last time that Robert and Hiraga speak to Father Julia in person, they turn down his offer to join them. Father Julia threatens to kill Ryota, and sentences Robert and Hiraga to death immediately. But in the end, Father Julia actually saves Ryota without any explanation. Why he does this, and what will happen with his massive conspiracy, are never explored further. The viewer is left with another scene confirming Robert and Hiraga's friendship as well as their commitment to God but nothing else. It doesn't even hint at if they will pursue Father Julia's cause any further. If you're looking for a lot of closure, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan can't provide it and will just leave you with even more questions. But at least it ties up the short stories, right?

3. Not Enough Character Development

Again, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is only 12 episodes long, so it doesn't have much time to pack in all the things it wanted to. That means that character background information and development is left most of the time to the side in favour of action and expansive conspiracies. From the beginning, you're given very little information about Hiraga other than he has a younger brother who is very sick and nothing about Robert. Through the story, eventually bits of Robert's backstory are revealed such as his murderous father and childhood abuse, but next to nothing is ever explained about Hiraga. His brother Ryota at least as the entire last episode to explain his own story a bit, but Hiraga is left with almost nothing. Hiraga and Robert do not grow much as characters in the series, either, other than becoming possibly better friends (though following the theme little is known of their early time together). As for the main villain, little is explained about Father Julia and his origins. How a man that seems so devout and moral can be so corrupt is intriguing, but Vatican Kiseki Chousakan only scrapes the surface of exploring it. The smaller villains that are only around for the purpose of one story arc are given almost no information either other than what is directly and immediately important. Vatican Kiseki Chousakan has a lot of characters, but sadly, none of them get the stories they deserve.

Final Thoughts

Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is an anime that had a lot of potentials that wasn't fulfilled in a satisfying way. The story was really original and interesting, and the mysteries were involved and deep with so many cool elements. Even just the idea of priests investigating miracles through science and reasoning was a really novel and unique idea. However, with only 12 episodes, Vatican Kiseki Chousakan turned out to be too ambitious, trying to fit too many stories and too much information into a short time period. It left the anime feeling rushed and unfinished, and with more questions than answers. But if you're just looking for something that is undeniably fun and entertaining to watch, guaranteed to keep you hooked and greedy for the next episode to find out what will happen, then Vatican Kiseki Chousakan is a good fit. Did you get a chance to watch Vatican Kiseki Chousakan? What did you think about it? If you haven't watched it yet, do you think you will give it a try? Let us know in the comments!

Who knew that an accidental Google search would end up impacting my life forever? In fifth grade, I was surfing the internet when something popped up. It was an episode of an anime I had never heard of. At the time, I already knew what anime was but had only watched Pokémon and Hamtaro. The thumbnail intrigued me, so I clicked on the video and watched a random episode of an anime called Aoi Yori Aoshi. Entertained, I binged more episodes and found even more anime, such as Rosario + Vampire and Kare Kano. But every child gets bored eventually, and one day I stopped watching anime completely. Fast forward to sophomore year of high school, I suddenly thought to myself, "Hey remember those anime you watched as a kid? I wonder if I can find them". With a quick search on Netflix, I found all the anime I watched and more. Ever since then, I became obsessed with anime and now I make some quick cash by uploading anime and manga reviews, live reactions, top 10s, and other otaku adventures to youtube. I keep up with all latest anime news, go to anime conventions, and host an otaku-related podcast. Anime has influenced my life to the point where there's no turning back. But then again, why would I?

Tatsumi ventured out of his village to work for the military in the capital and send his village some money in the process. On his first day in the capital, Tatsumi was rejected by the military, robbed, and picked up by a rich girl who was going to torture him to death. Tatsumi runs into Night Raid, a rebel group set out to overthrow the emperor and all of the city’s wrong-doers. At the same time, a new league of insane assassins team up to annihilate Night Raid. With a power boost from imperial arms, but losing close friends in the process, can Night Raid even hope to change the capital for the better? There is a ton of controversy regarding Akame ga Kill. A lot of people say it’s edgy, or that the ending was rushed and things like that. I do recognize the problems this series has, however, that does not mean I love it any less. Akame ga Kill is a dark fantasy filled with corruption, evil, and of course, dragons. I fell in love with every single one of the main characters. I also found my number one waifu for laifu, Esdeath. (I have a thing for crazy characters). Akame ga Kill’s overall atmosphere captivated me with its soundtrack, animation, setting, lovable characters, and action. I’d say Akame ga Kill is a good start for beginners getting into the dark fantasy genre.

Madoka is your average cutie with a normal home and a normal school life. One day, Madoka notices that she’s being stalked by Homura, the mysterious transfer student. On top of that, a cat-like creature named Kyuubey appears, giving Madoka the chance to have any wish granted to her in exchange for becoming a magical girl. Sounds fun, right? But why does Homura try everything she can to stop Kyuubey? They do say that magic comes with a price. I’m going to try to be as vague as possible, because I don’t want to ruin the experience for anyone. Madoka Magica is one of studio Shaft’s best works. The artstyle is unique with the animation being fluid. The characters are very interesting, and the story is something you can’t look away from. I finished Madoka Magica in a day, then watched the recap movies and finally the sequel film. The final movie does have an open end, but I was glad to see my favorite characters once more. There’s a reason why Madoka Magica figures are so hard to get, and that’s because everyone loves this anime!

Kaoru Nishimi is an intelligent and wealthy pianist who just moved to Kyushu. Kaoru is used to moving every year, so he doesn’t bother making any friends. Sentarou is a delinquent who gets into fights, but he isn’t exactly a bad guy. Somehow, the two cross each other’s paths and have the most unlikely friendship. In doing so, Sentarou introduces Kaoru to the world of jazz. They perform at school events or just for fun in the basement. Kaoru finally made a friend, but will he be able to keep it when they both like the same girl? I adore coming of age stories. We see Kaoru’s life from a first year student in high school all the way to adulthood. I loved seeing Kaoru transform from a rude pompous rich kid to a happy, friendly guy. And Kaoru and Sentaro’s bromance is without a doubt my favorite bromance in anime ever. The animation for the jazz sequences is as a fluid as an actual person playing, and that’s because it is! Rotoscoping was used for the jazz scenes to make it seem as though you are right there at a jazz concert. The drama of series got to me too, as I cried multiple times throughout the anime. And you know you can’t skip out on an anime that’s directed by Shinichiro Watanabe himself.

Get tangled up in the dizzy romantic comedy known as School Rumble. Tenma is hopelessly in love with Karasama, a rather odd student in her class. Harima loves Tenma, but he’s too much of a delinquent to be with her. And that’s not even the half of it. Watch Tenma and the rest of the cast fail miserably at getting the attention of the ones they love. For a very long time, School Rumble was my favorite anime of all time. It has two seasons of hilarious hijinks and fun characters. The cast is very large, but the anime makes plenty of time to give each character enough screen time so we get to understand who they are and who they love. The situations these characters get into can either be relatable or cartoonishly wacky. But no matter what the anime did, I always came back to see how the next episode would unfold. Am I being greedy for wanting a third season?

From the creator of Baccano, we have the crazy story of Durarara. Ikebukuro is a city filled with gangs, yakuza, otaku, and some insanely strong characters. Rumor has it that a headless rider roams around Ikebukuro at night. Mikado moves to Ikebukuro and reunites with an old friend. But Mikado quickly finds out how dangerous this city really is. Whenever I tell people that Durarara is my favorite anime of all time, the usual response I get is “Have you seen Baccano?”. Yes, even though I’ve seen Baccano, I enjoyed Durarara so much more. I watched this anime at a certain point in my life when everything seemed to be crashing down. Funny enough, that’s what happens or has happened to all of the characters in the series. I was able to relate to them, and felt attached to the characters as if they were real. Each character has a story of their own, just like everyone else in real life. We all have our hardships, but at some point we find a way to get past it. Durarara will likely remain as my favorite anime of all time forever.

Synopsis

“the Garden of sinners” is a series of hit cult novels written by Kinoko Nasu of TYPE-MOON (“Tsukihime -Lunar Legend-,” “Fate/stay night”) and published in the KODANSHA BOX series. The best-selling novel series has since been adapted into seven fully-animated theatrical films by one of the most renowned anime studios, ufotable (“Fate/Zero,” “Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works]”). Each corresponding movie directly covers each of the original seven chapters. In Japan, the series of movies were released in theaters, beginning December 2007. Each successive release became a box office smash with record high attendance. After lying in a coma for two years caused by a traffic accident, Shiki Ryougi awakens with amnesia. Inexplicably, she finds, in turn, that she has also obtained the “Mystic Eyes of Death Perception” in which she can see the invisible lines of mortality that hold every living and non-living thing together. Working for a small independent agency, Shiki attempts to unravel the baffling mystery behind a series of abnormal, horrifying incidents. Are they a foreshadowing that leads to something even more tragic and ominous? Things are not what they appear to be on the surface, but what dark revelations lie underneath? In this modern occult-action thriller, Shiki must tackle supernatural incidents with her special abilities while searching for her purpose for living.

Being a cop in any part of the world is hard work. It requires risking your life to protect others, but also long, long hours of investigation. There’s also the fact that there are a lot of laws that some people feel shouldn’t apply to them or should have small loopholes, and thus, get angry when cops stop them –like that pesky concept of speed limits or “no parking” signs. And well, the other issues such as police corruption and other similar dark situations that make us wonder whether the boys in blue are heroes or villains. Which doesn’t make the job easier for those cops who are good. This makes the police force a perfect setting for fiction, because in one single group, we have everything we need for great drama or comedy. There’s a reason why we love police procedurals and cop shows. And in anime, we get even more fantastic settings for those police forces to work for good so we have some heroes that get to fight for higher stakes than the most down-to-earth neighborhood police officer. So let’s update our previous list of police anime series and see if your favorite makes the cut this time around.

10. Hyper Police

[sourceLink asin="B00008H2H7" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" April 1997 – September 1997 " post_id=""]

In a world where humans are an endangered species, and monsters and hybrids cohabitate in the rebuilt Tokyo, making sure the law sticks is a bit complicated. Natsuki Sasahara, Sakura Bokuseiinmonzeninari, Batanen, and Tomy Fujioka are a group of cops/bounty hunters who try to keep the peace in Tokyo. While they’re not an official police force, they’re the ones who can chase criminals down and keep the public safe. In the meantime, they also have to fight discrimination because even when the “monsters” are the majority now, it doesn’t mean that everyone accepts them. Hyper Police is a very funny comedy, and a bit of an outsider on this list because they're not quite cops. They have to follow certain rules and have the authority to make sure others follow the law, but that doesn't make them cops. Still, their inter-team dynamics, the way they have to work with others, and how certain crimes are way above their pay grade makes them a great example of a crime-fighting team, and it earns the tenth place on our list.

9. Peace Maker Kurogane

In 1854, Japan finally opened its shores to trade with the West. This was not an easy situation, as the internal politics in Japan were divided between those who thought it was important to keep Japan free from barbarians and those who thought it was important to open to the West. To defend the Tokugawa shogunate, they created the Roshigumi, which was later given the task of patrolling Kyoto and renamed the Shinsengumi, becoming one of the first police forces of modern Japan. Ichimura Tetsunosuke joins them as one of the older member’s pages in order to get the strength needed to avenge his parents, while his older brother Tatsunosuke joins to become their accountant. One of the great things about this series is the difference between the brothers. Tetsunosuke wants revenge and he loves violence, while Tatsunosuke only wants enough money to survive: This allows us to see both sides of the Shinsengumi, both their actions against the rebels or petty criminals and how the force was maintained and kept going. As the series is loosely based on the real Shinsengumi force, we also get to see some of its most legendary members. They may not be completely historically accurate, but the anime still gives viewers a quick summary of a very interesting time in Japanese history and that is why it deserves the ninth place on our list.

8. Mousou Dairinin (Paranoia Agent)

[sourceLink asin="B003N3H568" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

When a string of attacks happen on a neighborhood, where a young man in skates with a bat ambushes people, you can count on the police to take charge to try to stop the attacker. However, the investigation is not as simple as going on some stakeouts and trying to flush out the kid. They need to figure out what all the victims have in common, why they are being targeted or if it’s a situation of convenience for the mysterious Shounen Bat. And here's where the police hit a snag: Everybody lies to them. There's not a single person who wants to cooperate and soon the paranoia gets to the police force as even their partners start lying. Although Paranoia Agent doesn’t completely focus on the police, the whole series is about figuring out the motives and identity of Shounen Bat and that makes it a police procedural series. Sure, we also follow some of the victims, and there’s also a small paranormal element, but in the end, the important part is the mystery. Directed by the late Satoshi Kon, it is one of his most famous series and it really deserves the eighth place on our list.

7. Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor: On television (Patlabor: The Mobile Police – The TV Series)

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="sentai" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 47 " aired=" October 1989 – September 1990 " post_id=""]

One of the biggest challenges police forces have always faced is how fast technology advances and how some unethical individuals use said technology to commit crimes. We don't need to look far to find examples in real life, from cyberstalking –a crime that some police departments still don't believe is a crime-, to hacking. Now, imagine how much more difficult crime fighting would be for cops if we had giant robots as part of the working class' tools and therefore available for criminals? That is the scenario that Patlabor gives us, where the giant robots aren’t amazing miraculous machines, but more like complicated forklifts that need constant work to keep functioning. Created by Mamoru Oshii, who is also the mind behind Ghost in the Shell, it's a curious slice of life that can also be a mecha and cop show with a lot of comedy behind it. While the series mentions that the Special Vehicles Unit Division 1 are the best at fighting crime with their Labors, we only focus on the lives and cases of Division 2, who are less efficient and more accident prone. This is bad with normal cops, but when you add giant machines to the equation, it becomes a really dangerous situation. Because of this realistic approach to giant robots and cops, Patlabor earns the seventh place on our list.

6. Onihei

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="MNPS-122" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2017 – April 2017 " post_id=""]

In a country where many houses were built with paper walls, arson is a terrible crime. This is why in the city of Edo, there’s a special police force tasked with fighting arson-robberies under the command of Hasegawa Heizo. Heizo is so hard on criminals and so devoted to justice, that he soon got himself a nickname among those he chased: Onihei, the Demon. Once the Demon is on your tail, you can be sure that he won't stop until you're brought to justice, and then you have only two choices: either fight or repent. Based on a series of novels by Shoutarou Ikenami that was originally published in 1967, Onihei is the latest adaptation of the demon cop and the only one that has been animated. Heizo is an amazing hero whose skills with a katana are unrivaled, but that doesn't mean he's only devoted to his work, as he also has a loving family that, at times, will call him out if he's risking too much in the search for justice. For any lovers of history, samurai, and police procedurals, Onihei is a perfect series and more than deserving of the sixth place on our list.

5. Jin Rou (Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade)

[sourceLink asin="B00ID9Q0TK" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 1 " aired=" November 1999 " post_id=""]

Sometimes, it's hard to see the police as the good guys. When we're following the story of a dictatorship that keeps all citizens down, who could see the forces that support said dictatorship as the heroes? Well, Jin-Rou attempts to do this by giving some humanity to Kazuki Fuse, member of the Kerberos special Unit, who starts having doubts about his job when he is one of the few witnesses to the bomb-suicide of a young girl who was part of an anti-government protest. Jin Rou is among those anime movies everyone recommends, and for good reason. Directed by Mamoru Oshii, this movie is the third part of a saga, but it can stand on its own without problems. We get to see both the horrors of war both on the side of the rebels and the police force, as well as how corruption and power struggles can affect a police force that, in the end, truly believes that they're doing the best for the people even if we as the audience can tell it's not true. If you haven't watched it, do it as soon as you can. If you have watched it, we can agree that it deserves the fifth place on our list.

4. B: The Beginning

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B07987TFQH" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" March 2018" post_id=""]

Going back to more traditional police work, in B: The Beginning, part of the story follows the RIS, the Royal Investigative Agency of the Cremona’s Kingdom. The kingdom is usually peaceful, but in the latest months has been plagued by some gruesome murders that seem to be connected as all of them have a mark that looks like a stylized B. Because of this, the RIS has decided they’re the work of a single killer, codenamed Killer B. And as if that wasn’t enough, soon, the investigation raises new clues about terrible crimes that happened years before and caused the retirement of one of their best detectives. B: The Beginning is a very interesting police mystery series, as it seems to give up the truth about the killer in the first episode, just to introduce a huge conspiracy behind him and another mystery killer in the second episode. It mirrors a bit how real investigations work, as real police detectives usually have many cases active at the same time. For its good mystery and realistic police force that sometimes is way over their heads in their investigations, B: The Beginning earns the fourth place on our list.

3. Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B000JMKBYO" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 376 " aired=" June 1996 – December 2004 " post_id=""]

Not every police show has to deal with the most heinous crimes. After all, in real life, we have both homicide detectives and traffic cops whose only worry should be that no one skips a red light.Kankichi Ryotsu is one of the latter, working at a police station in front of Kameari Park where there's not a lot of actual crime to fight. That is, except for the constant attempts by Kankichi to get rich with the latest fad that sometimes skirts the law. He is in many respects the Japanese answer to the stereotype of the American cop who is only interested in eating donuts, only that in Kankichi's case, besides his love for Ponzi schemes that leave him worse than how he started, he prefers playing pachinko or betting in horse races rather than just eating. Kochira Katsuhihaku Kameari Kouenmae Hatshutsujo, or Kochikame, for short, was based on the longest-running Shonen Jump manga which boasted more than 1600 chapters before it ended. It’s also one of Japan’s most beloved manga, as many generations read it during its run. Unlike other entries on the list, Kochikame is a very light comedy that deals more with the daily life of cops rather than getting into the "exciting" parts of crime fighting that, let's be honest, don't happen to every single cop in the world. And for anyone looking for a fun afternoon and getting to know a bit of Japan's daily life, Kochikame is a perfect choice and earns the third place on our list.

2. Psycho-Pass

The best way to fight crime is to make sure that there are no criminals in your society. At least that’s what the Sibyl System boasts in Japan. On paper, it is perfect: every person is analyzed and if their “Psycho-pass” -a number that includes their mental health, emotional state, criminal desire, and the stress they live with-, is too high, then they’re sent to mandatory therapy before they can commit an actual crime. This is, of course, unless the number is so high that rehabilitation is impossible and thus, the sentence is always death. Of course, the idea of punishing crime before it happens is really controversial. But the Public Safety Bureau also deals with those who have managed to trick the system enough to actually commit crimes, people who for some reason have a very low Psycho-pass despite being criminals. One of these people is Shogo Makishima, who is dedicated to find a way to destroy the Sybil System. As the series progresses, we get to wonder if maybe he’s right, but at the same time, we get to know the PSB and get very attached to them. As this series presents a very intriguing police force and tries to explain how it works, it lands on the second place on our list.

1. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

[sourceLink asin="B001D265RQ" asin_jp="" bookwalker_id="" cdj_product_id="" text="" url="" ]

Speaking about technology that makes police work difficult, imagine how hard it would be to follow a suspect in a world where full-body transplants into empty robot bodies are possible? How difficult would it be to catch a criminal in a world where you can't really identify someone by describing their face and talented and dangerous hackers can easily steal identities? This is the world where Major Motoko Kusanagi lives. She's part of Section 9, a special task force who deals precisely with the kind of criminals who try to use cyberspace as their personal playground and have no qualms about hacking real people to get what they want. It's hard to say something about Ghost in the Shell that hasn't been said before. The series is based on the great Masamune Shirow's manga with the same title and has been adapted many times with different degrees of success. And one of the reasons why it's so beloved is because, despite the fantastic setting, one can't help but feel the characters as real cops and follow their investigations picturing that, yes, if we could download our personalities into robots, this would be how the police would work in the situation. Because of this, and the amazing direction of Kenji Kamiyama, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, is still the best police force-focused anime we can recommend.

Final Thoughts

The cops in real life have always been somewhat divisive, what with news about corruption, abuse of power, and violence. But in fiction, all those things are what make them really interesting, both as heroes and as villains. Adding a good mystery to that, it's no surprise the police procedural and cop genres are so popular in anime and all other forms of entertainment. But because everyone has their own favorite, we need to ask: Which one is your favorite police anime? Is it on the list? Or did we miss it? If that’s the case, we’d love to see your recommendations in the comments below, but if we got all your favorites, we’d also like to know why you love those series.

One of the great things about anime is the excellent use or interpretation of police. In several anime series, you always have some sort of police force or enforcement agency fighting for what's right and good against the wrong and evil. Not that many series have a strong presence of police in them. That's why this list is determined solely on the intense use of police alone, having the series completely based on them, or the characters representing the police itself. This means an officer or a detective. Finding selections of anime for this segment of “Top 10 Police Anime”, was a bit of a challenge. Most shows can be categorized as a police anime, but really, lacking the quality of having a strong relation to police. An example would be detective shows like Death Note, Detective Conan, or even City Hunter. These are some honorable mentions, but, they're not strictly based on police. The selection below is some of the best police anime out and are ranked accordingly. Here are the “Top 10 Police Anime” for you to enjoy!

10. Burn-Up Scramble

Taking place in Tokyo A.D. 2023, due to the change of internationalization and enlargement of trading in society, the dark part of changes as well. Criminals are becoming more violent, and organizations are increasing in size, because of this, the peace and security in the world is getting worse and worse. With the government finally taking it seriously by introducing an innovated system, criminals are now being dealt with by an extralegal police force made up of a criminal team of warriors of female elites. 9. Himitsu: The Revelation

[sourceLink asin="B0019LGAZI" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

This anime is a bit more serious with some shoujo in it, and kind of reminds me of another anime that is listed in this selection. A new method has been developed which allows the police to display the memories of a dead person. This method is used to solve several murder cases that were deemed impossible from the beginning, but with a cost. Society begins to question the privacy of the dead as strangers mess around in their most sensitive and private memories. This also questions the effect it has on those who search through the memories of the dead, which can affect the psychological state of the viewer.

8. Tokko

Tokkou

This is another great anime series based on police. Tokko, follows Shindou as he just graduated from the police academy and assigned to the Special Mobile Investigation Force called, Tokki. The day of his graduation is when he met a half-naked tattooed girl from his dreams wearing a police uniform name Rokujo. Rokujo was in the same class as Shindou but in a different force called Special Public Safety Task Force, or Tokki. Shindou later joins the Tokki in order to avenge his parents’ death and investigate the mysterious murders of residents from his hometown. During his investigation, bottomless pits begin to appear all over Japan while horrifying creatures begin to emerge from them.

7. Patlabor

[sourceLink asin="B00B2TUL1G" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

This anime has some comedy and Shounen that is collaborated well with police and is a very popular series in Japan. Taking place in the future where advanced robotics lead to the creation of industrial size robots known as, Labors. These labors are used in a variety of ways from construction, fire-fighting, military, and many more useful purposes. The one drawback to this is the machines are operated by humans, and humans can sometimes lead to crime. Because of such acts of crime created using these labors, the police fight fire with fire, and use their own advanced set of labors against them called, Patlabors. This begins the story of a Second Special Vehicles Division filled with a motley crew of policemen as operators and women giving their all to fight against crime while trying to live a normal life.

5. Paranoia Agent (JPN : Mousou Dairinin)

Paranoia Agent
[sourceLink asin="B0002IQHCU" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

This anime is somewhat loosely based on police, but still has a strong presence in it. Even though, this anime can be viewed more as a psychological crime story, the detectives in it conduct their investigation to the point of insanity, in a way. It all started with an elementary student who was dubbed the “Shounen Bat” or “ Lil Slugger” started going around attacking people with a bent, golden bat. Two detectives work tirelessly to investigate the incidents in order to stop the kid from conducting further more attacks. Little did they know, the case turns out to be much more than they expected.

Known as a cult classic of police anime, Your Under Arrest can be one of the best influenced anime about police. The story starts with Natsumi Tsujimoto running late on her first day as a patrol officer for the Bokuto Police Department. She's a spunky moped rider who likes to take shortcuts, but instead, always finds herself chased down and cited by the mechanical genius and expert driver Miyuki Kobayakawa. As she arrives at the precinct of the police force, she finds out her new partner is in fact the one that tickets her earlier, Kobayakawa. 3. On Your Mark

[sourceLink asin="B00005FVPJ" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

This is an anime that has some good use of police in it as far as defying the beliefs of what is to represent the police force and following your heart. If anyone is a Miyazaki fan like I am, you will find that this movie is a great interpretation of the police, but on a different level. Which is why I selected it for this “Top 10”. Showing that not all authority of the police force can be trusted, in a way, mankind can no longer survive on the ground because of radiation from the sun and nuclear plants that were abandoned. After the police raid a religious cult's compound from a fierce gun fight, two police officers find a winged girl who was chained and barely alive. Government scientist appear in hazmat suits to take the girl away into another research facility, while the two officers realize that they caught her between transfer from one prison to another. They then formulated a daring escape plan to free the mutant girl so she can live life like a normal human being.

[sourceLink asin="B019G9DR3C" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

One of the most recent anime series to be conceived, and also, one of the most popular series to date. This police related anime is one of my favorite, it brings a realism to it that seems possible in real life situations. Himitsu: The Revelations reminds me of this series, and rightfully so. The series takes place in the near future where it is possible to instantaneously measure the frequency and quantify an individuals state of mind and personality. With the information being recorded and processed in a term called, Psycho-Pass, a persons state of mind can be judge based on the individuals state. This is based on measuring the criminal tendency of the individual, which is how judgement is conducted. The story follows a team of policemen who are dedicated in maintaining order. The only thing is, it turns out to be more elaborate than expected.

With this being one of the most police oriented series in anime, the GITS series is by far the best. Taking place in the not so distant world, where mankind has advanced in ways to complete body transplant from flesh to machines. However, criminals also make good use of this technology, which leads to new and very dangerous acts of crime. In response to such methods, the Japanese government has established a group of elites called, Section 9. Independently operated as a police unit to handle intense crimes, they deal with crimes that spread through the social spectrum. This leads them to face such challenges like the “Laughing Man” and the “Individual Eleven”.

Gakkou Gurashi! dvd

Among the horror anime offerings this summer of 2015 is a series which blends two genres that are not usually taken together – Slice of Life and Horror. Seamlessly managing to harmonize elements that are light in tone and unnervingly grim at the same time, Gakkou Gurashi! has managed to endear itself to anime fans in the few episodes that have been released thus far. Of course, though very rare, anime with somewhat the same elements as Gakkou Gurashi! have been produced before. Here then is a short list of 6 anime titles that may very well keep you very interested, at least until the next episode of Gakkou Gurashi! is released. Here then are 6 anime like Gakkou Gurashi!

1. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Mahou Shoujo Madokau2605Magica
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2011 – April 2011 "]

At the core of this series lies Kaname Madoka, an average 8th grader who, despite being quite shy, is a happy teenager who loves her family and friends very much. Her life takes a dramatic turn however, when a chance encounter with Kyuubei, a cat-like being, ends with her being endowed with powers that enable her to transform into a magical girl. Together with her friends, they get introduced to the world of witches and magic. This anime is a perfect example of a series that must never be judged by its cover. Just like Gakkou Gurashi!, which looks quite average and normal from the outside but is immensely deep and thought-provoking on the inside, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magika is an anime that looks like a regular magical girl series on the outside, but is actually a deep, psychoanalytical, and immensely dramatic masterpiece on the inside. From the first episode alone, you as the viewer will notice that it is not your typical magical girls anime, and boy, does it deliver in that aspect.

2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)

higurashi no naku koroni dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2005 – September 2006 "]

Yet another series that manages to bridge the gap between Slice of Life and Horror, When They Cry is another dark anime in the guide of moe that has managed to gain a pretty good following among anime fans. The story centers on Maebara Keiichi, a young teenage boy who is adjusting to his new life in Hinamizawa, an isolated mountain village. There, he meets and befriends a group of girls, each one with a dark secret that involves acts of murder, dismemberment, and pure on psychological torture. Just like Gakkou Gurashi!, this anime manages to blend elements of different genres perfectly, forming a cohesive whole that is both entertaining and quite disturbing at the same time. What you have to expect when you pick up this series though, is the fact that the plot is divided into numerous, individual arcs, all of them starting at the beginning of the story’s timeline. Despite this ‘reset’ that happens every few episodes however, the series manages to deliver an anime experience that is quite unlike any other.

3. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls -Bougyakusareta Tamashii no Jukyou

Corpse Party dvd
[Information episodes=" 4 " aired=" July 2013 "]

The plot of this anime involves a group of students from Kisaragi Academy, which just happens to be a school that was built on the same site as Heavenly Host Elementary School, a place in which a string of brutal murders took place many years ago. Through a series of supernatural events, the students find themselves transported to Heavenly Host, where they are forced to fight for their survival and for the chance to go back home, while they get continually hunted as prey by violent spirits out to kill them. Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is an anime that was created for one purpose and one purpose alone – to shock and terrify its viewers. In fact, one will not find any shortage of critiques of the show praising it for being the one true horror anime that has been released in recent years. With a moe mask that hides its grim plot similar to Gakkou Gurashi!, this is one anime that has proven itself to never disappoint its viewers when it comes to the horror it brings. Just make sure that you are up to it if you do decide to watch it.

4. Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

tokyo magnitude 8.0 dvd
[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" July 2009 – September 2009 "]

This anime’s premise is quite unique in its own right, featuring a plot that is very realistic and pretty close to the scientific possibility of Tokyo being hit by a massive earthquake. The plot centers on siblings Mirai and Yuuki, who opts to visit the artificial island, Odaiba, for a robot exhibition. When a magnitude 8.0 earthquake suddenly hits and levels Tokyo, the siblings must work together with Mari, a delivery woman they met on the island, in order to go back to their Setagaya home in western Tokyo. Both Gakkou Gurashi! and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 feature a small group of people trying to adapt in the aftermath of a disaster that is beyond everyone’s control. While the former features a zombie outbreak, the latter features a powerful earthquake. However, their greatest similarity may very well be the characterizations employed as plot devices, as both series feature characters that undergo extreme emotional trauma to the point of entering a state of denial.

5. High School of the Dead

highschool of the dead dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2010 – September 2010 "]

High School of the Dead is all about a group of students from Fujimi High School who are among the last survivors of a massive zombie outbreak in Japan. With the entire social system falling into chaos, the students, together with the school’s ditzy buxom nurse, must band together in order to find answers behind what’s causing the outbreak, while trying their best to survive the unwavering waves of the undead that is out to get them. Though the anime has become notorious for its massive amounts of fan service, High School of the Dead is nonetheless an undeniably fun series to watch, with lots of action, some dashes of drama, and a pretty quirky dialogue that makes then characters stand out very well. Just like Gakkou Gurashi!, it is a series that explores the theme of young people trying to survive in a world that is at an end. Oh, and both series feature zombies too.

6. Tasogare Otome x Amnesia (Dusk Maiden of Amnesia)

tarogare otome amnesia dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2012 – June 2012 "]

The plot of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is a very unique one, featuring a story that starts 6o years prior to the events in the anime, when a woman was left to die in the abandoned school building behind the exclusive Seikyou Academy. In the present day, Siekyou’s clubs include one which caters to students interested in paranormal investigations. What makes the club very eerie is the fact that it is being led not by a regular student, but by the ghost of the woman murdered many years back. The series is yet another example of an anime that is able to achieve a certain balance when blending elements of numerous, even contrasting genres. Featuring elements from the Slice of Life, Horror, and even the Comedy and Romance genres, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia is one anime that is, similar to Gakkou Gurashi!, very rare in its own right. Apart from this, themes that are heavy on the psychological aspect of the characters are also explored fully in both of these series.

So there you have it! 6 anime that may just fill some valuable and worthy screentime to get you through the week while waiting for the next episode of Gakkou Gurashi! to air. Of course, other notable anime that are also quite similar would be Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, which also uses the theme of delusions, Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru, which is also another pretty serious anime that wears a moe mask, and So Ra No Wo To, another anime that seems light at the surface, but continually does not pull any punches when dealing with mature and very realistic themes. You can definitely check these out as well, as these three are quite notable in their own right, too. Are there any other anime with this mix of elements on your mind? Feel free to comment below!
